The Comic Corner: Lamenting the Loss – Surge

surge

Despite being introduced into publication less than ten years ago (Jan. 2004), young mutant Noriko “Nori” Ashida, superhumanly known as “Surge”, has been severely persecuted. Albeit, this is a vague statement as it is difficult to be more specific; the character has suffered not only at the hands of enemies and fellow characters, but has been equally mistreated by the writing staff at Marvel. A prominent character in the 2000s, Surge has faded quietly out a primary role in recent years, merely appearing in cameo roles during big battles, i.e. “Second Coming” or the recent “Avengers vs X-Men”.

Pokémon 3DS Requirements

Pokémon is an interesting little paradox. One of the core tenets is evolving your little monsters to make them more powerful and give them access to new and more powerful moves, yet the series refuses to do any kind of evolution itself. While the game series has added plenty of enhancements such as the new Pokémon types, double, triple, and rotation battles, and Pokémon contests, for the most part it has remained unchanged: you start your journey out by getting a fire, water, or grass Pokémon from the Professor, you go through the eight gyms collecting badges in a bid to challenge the Pokémon League and you stop a nefarious Team from their plans (typically world domination or gaining power) while completing the Pokédex. This is the Pokémon formula and it works. As they say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Pokémon 3DS is presumably the next release to come after the Black and White sequels. When those games come out, hopefully the franchise will have made some much needed changes.

First Post

Except it’s not the first at all. Welcome to the Pop Culture Social Club, an alternative take on pop culture. PCSC aims to do three things:

  • point out some of the lesser know things that are still awesome (aka Charlie Bone and Percy Jackson instead Harry Potter),
  • critique things that are popular, but can be better (like Pokemon),
  • and provide news and commentary on major pop culture developments.

Hopefully, there will be lots more to announce in the coming future, but I hope enjoy the site.
